I'm originally from a small, rural town in Pennsylvania, where I lived for eighteen years. I moved to Scranton, Pennsylvania where I started my college career attending the Penn State Worthington Scranton branch campus. After studying there for two years, I moved down to State College to finish at Penn State's main campus, University Park. I didn't always know I wanted to go into Broadcast Journalism, but what gravitated me towards it was my interest in writing. I wanted to be able to study something where I knew I'd have the opportunity to practice and improve my skills as a writer. As I started taking my Communications and Journalism courses, I also began to grow more interested in the technology used within the field. I enjoyed learning about operating the cameras, filming, and digital editing. Combining my interest in technology with writing, I knew I had found the right major for me.
Since the start of my college career, I've had the opportunity to build learning experiences for working in the field. One of the most beneficial of those opportunities was the internship I completed over the Summer of 2013. I interned in the news department at WNEP-TV Channel 16 in Scranton, Pennsylvania. As an intern for WNEP, I was given the opportunity to learn through hands-on experience from professionals already working in the field. I was able to go with reporters as they were covering stories throughout the viewing area and work with producers to learn more about what goes into making a news broadcast. I was given the opportunity to complete interviews and line produce in the Control Room with producers. I also worked at the Assignment Desk and attended morning and afternoon news meetings as well.
Through my courses at Penn State, I also had the opportunity to complete hands-on projects and stories that helped me to learn more about working as a Broadcast Journalist. I completed several video and radio projects for different courses, including learning about newsroom management and some of the recent statistical trends of the industry. I learned about camera operations and digital editing, becoming proficient with many editing software including: Adobe Premier Pro, Final Cut Pro, and Hindenburg. I also completed a minor in Information, Sciences, and Technology (IST), which helped me to learn about some of the latest technologies that have been developing in recent years. Through the IST minor, I worked with a variety of different technologies and software programs to complete team projects. My career goals for the future are to work as a reporter, producer, editor, or photographer for radio or TV. I am hardworking and enjoy learning about new technology. I hope to use what I've learned from my education and internship experience as I pursue my career goals.
